Get someone to coach you on how to use the sling. It's much better on your back, much more versitile and much easier to nurse in. Try going to a La Leche League meeting. Many of the moms there will probably be experienced in using slings and may be able to help you get it to work better for you and baby.

I've never nursed in a snugli, but i nurse in my Ergo all the time http://www.ergobabycarrier.com
I just lower the straps, hike up my shirt and cover his head with the hood if i feel like it.
i used to nurse in my sling, but i can't do a single shoulder carry because of back problems.
Have you tried different sling positions? They really are better for baby's spine than a carrier that has them dangling by their crotch.

I found it harder to nurse in the snugli type carriers with any sort of modesty, your entire side and breast is exposed when you get baby latched on (and you end up needing to drape something over that or just cup your hand to cover your breast.) I suggest going to a Nine In Nine Out (NINO) meeting to try out different carriers and see which one you feel most comfortable nursing in (they can also help you in person on how to nurse in the snugli.) Here's the link to their website, you just need to look for the yahoo group :)

I'm not sure about nursing in a Snugli carrier, but I know plenty of women who nurse in Maya wraps. They are very handy because you can do it in public and people won't even notice, and also you can get up and move around to get things done while nursing if you need to. I have two Maya wraps and they are fantastic. I put a link at the bottom for them and for how to nurse in one.
There's a local babywearing group in my area that offers a class every couple of months for free at the library. You can try out different kinds of baby carriers and see what works best for you. You might have one in your area. If you are interested, check out the link below to your local NINO (Nine In Nine Out) group.

This carrier is similar to a Snugli. It should work the same. I had far more luck with the sling. There are sling tutorials at www.mamatoto.org to help with your technique. Whichever carrier you choose to take, you'll need lots of practice before you feel confident in public. I used to practice at mom's group and in front of a mirror at home!

One day while out on a shopping trip, I nursed my daughter in her sling. It was so convenient. I simple un buttoned a few buttons on my blouse and got her latched on (I did this in a dressing room). Once she was nursing well, I tossed a blanket over my shoulder to cover and carried on with my shopping.
It kept her quiet and she fell asleep at the breast. It was the easiest shopping trip I've ever had with kids!
Once she was older, she got to where she didn't like her carrier either UNTIL I turned her around so she could see out, instead of looking at my chest all the time. Hopefully this will work.

It is much harder to nurse in a snugli. Just ask how I know ;) It was very frustrating to me and baby. The baby sling can at least be taken off and draped over your shoulder as a nursing cover.
