How do I bring this up with my employer? I will be going on maternity leave (unpaid for about 2 weeks before due date and 6-8 weeks post-partum.) A month after I return from maternity leave I have a family vacation planned (for 5 days off work). This vacation was planned and paid for BEFORE I knew I was pregnant...and it is nonrefundable. It is also the exact same week that I had my family vacation and took off work last year.

How do I talk to them about this?

I'm asking because...wouldn't my employer get mad that I took off a couple months for maternity and then right away requested vacation??? This is my first child so I have NO IDEA about this kind of stuff!!

Also, should I let them know before my maternity leave or immediately after I come back (1 month's notice)

Just let them know. Many people do this, and plan on doing this. I think your employer will not be upset, but would appreciate advance notice.

Just go talk to them. Big deal, you are entitled to your vacation just as you are entitled to your maternity leave.
Don't sweat it. There's nothing your employer can say or do.
If they're at all understanding they wont mind u taking longer than 8-10 weeks off after having a baby.
I only took 3 months off total with my first child..he was 10 weeks old when i went back to work, and I was far from ready to be doing the work. Your body has been through so much and so many changes. I went back far too soon.
Why aren't you taking the year off, maternity leave?? If you qualify, take it, I'm taking it this time. I didn't qualify for leave with pay with my first pregnancy, I didn't have my job for long enough..but I'll take advantage this time.
