go to long beach. A lot of people who think of long beach think of snoop dog and all that gansta crap. But there is a nice relatively inexpensive part of town. Look in a part of town called belmont shore but more specifically belmont heights. Parking is bad but worth the effort. this is an artists/ student community so if you're young this is where it's happening. I love long beach till this day it's where I went to school and where I learned what weekends are all about.... breakfast!
enjoy!!
just for example of what I was paying...
850 for a 2bedroom 1bath upper dulplex with parking in the artist district.
my friend paid 900-1000 for her 2 bed 1 bath no parking in belmont heights

Everyone wants to live by the ocean but unless you are willing to share a place with some others besides you and your friend get ready to pay for being close to the beach. This is true all up and down the state, even 20 years ago.

You need to be more specific. Do you want to live "On the beach" or just in a coastal town?

Do you want to live in Southern California (sun) or Northern California (cooler)

E-mail me or choose me as best answer and I will reply to specifics with specifics

Pismo Beach on the central coast would be a great option to research.
