Common.... when DRIVE chain is not properly maintained. You are aware that the chain make the wheels turn and makes you go right? Hope you learned your lesson.
I know it sounds mean, but you have some work on your hands and you are lucky that the chain didnt break a hole in the engine case....then you would have to buy another motor or split cases $$$$

Easy enough to get the broken rod out. Pull the clutch cover on the other side, remove the pressure plate. At this point you may be able to remove the rest of the rod from the right hand side of the shaft. If not, tap it through to the left with another rod or punch of the same size. Your probably going to have to change the clutch push rod seal while your at it.

This same thing happened to me last summer. I had to replace the water pump, clutch pushrod and the sprocket cover. Also new chain and sprockets were ordered. If you are mechanically inclined, this is an easy fix. Once you get the parts, it should take no more than a couple of hours.
You didn't mention what kind of bike.
Good luck!

Common? - When you don't maintain you chain, it's gonna happen. Check for wear, check the chain tension before each ride (that's one step to a pre-ride inspection), adjust at least once a week and keep it well lubed.
