I remember hearing those having to get a blood tests, I wonder why it was needed. Now it's not required and I wonder why.

If it was to see if you were cousins, that's odd, because in my genealogy research my parents ARE cousins. So that couldn't have been right.

I agree blood testing needs to come back to check for diseases like that. I think our governement has become very lax in protecting us. There was a time when I felt the governement was protecting us. (That was a long long time ago)

The blood test had to do with trying to reduce birth defects. If the two people with diametrically opposing blood types have a child, there is a danger the child would have birth defects due to the mother's immune system attacking the baby (if the baby inhereted the father opposing blood type). The blood type was to inform them of the potential danger so they could consult with a doctor before having children.

Now, medical science it progressed to the point where this can be corrected in pregnant mothers and is no longer as much a concern.

Edit - This is NOT to check for relation. The test is only for blood type. A test for relation would require a DNA test, which is much more indepth.

30 long years ago when we got married the blood test was required.
It was to make sure that children would not suffer from conflicting rh types. In our state it had nothing to do with STD.
In fact they took a sample checked blood type and discarded the blood in our presence.
Back in the day many home births resulted in infant death due to rh conflict.
Today they will do a total transfusion at the hospital.

The blood test didn't check for relationships or RH factors in blood that can lead to complications in childbirth. They were started in order to cut down on the number of cases of venereal diseases. Some states still require the tests while others don't.

I have often wondered that myself. Is it supposed to be an invasion of privacy or something? I would want to know if my spouse had HIV. (Second cousins can legally get married I believe).

When I got married in '98 it was still required and I am unaware of it not being required today.

The blood test was to ensure that two people getting married weren't brother and sister. I don't know why it stop. Maybe people should test for hiv before getting married.

I have no idea why it was required. Makes no sense to me. Thankfully, it is no longer required in CA where we got married.
