adverb modifying hung

"Tearfully" answers the question "how?" and refers to the way in which I hung up. Because "hung up" is a verb, "tearfully" is an adverb. Another clue is that words ending in "ly" that have been made from adjectives (in this case, "tearful") are adverbs.

CanProf is correct. It is an adverb which modifies the verb, "hung" because it describes how I hung up the phone. Most (maybe all, but I don't know for sure) words ending with an "ly" suffix are adverbs.

its an adverb because it describes the verb hanging up

and just so you know most words that end in "ly" like perfectly, or joyfully, or mercilessly are all adverbs b/c they describe a verb

ex: i tearfully cried"
