Depends on the tv
I believe normal tube tv's are between 320-360(definitely don't know this one for sure though)
Tvs that can handle progressive scan are capable of 480p(progressive scan)
High definition TVs go anywhere from 720p to 1080i(interlaced scan),or 1080p
But then again a TV cant put out a better picture than your hardware sends to it, and vice versa. Can't expect an xbox360 to look as good on a regular tube tv as it would on a HD TV. And just because you have an hd tv your dvd player wont display a high definition signal, unless you have a Blu-Ray dvd player of course

It depends where you are, in UK it has been 625 since 1964.
I don't know what it is in USA, but in 1936 RCA station W2XBS New York began transmittingon a definition of 343 lines from the Empire State Building.

625 lines for the U.K should be double that for high definition.

It used tobe 625 in UK, but now we have gone digital I imagine it's much more.
