Try the holiday park in Nairn, there is good buses and trains that can take you to Inverness or Elgin, the caravan are nice, the beach is gorgeous, the complex itself is nice, plenty to do including swimming. I was there a few years ago with my children aged at the time 11 and 9, and they loved it. It was called Haven Holiday park, but now I see its Park Dean.
Wherever you go have fun!

Aberdeen and/or Aberdeenshire is a great place for an 8 year old. In Aberdeen, there is the Science Museum call Satrosphere, down at the beach, highly recommended. I spent a whole day there with my 8 year old at the time, so much to do, educational and lots of fun. There is also Cadonas indoor theme park with some great rides and a bowling alley virtually next door, also down at the beach links. If you want a really quiet swimming pool, then Keith, Banffshire (local authority, next to the Grammar school) is fabulous, you usually have the whole pool to yourselves, or just a couple of other bods around. If you like heritage, then there is Archaeolink near Inch, a heritage site which focuses on the Celts, yet again great fun & educational. If you fancy the coastline, then there is an aquarium at a place called MacDuff, near Banff, small in comparison to Sealife Centres, but enjoyable. They are all accessible by public transport, however, you would find Aberdeen & Keith easier to get to than Inch & MacDuff. Elgin is not too bad, Cooper's Park often has little boats that can be used by children, cinema will probably have something suitable. Have a great time!!!

There's some great suggestions here, but I guess this is done with your 8 year old's enjoyment in mind - so some simple activities might work well to keep him alert. I know the area well as i visited many times with my then 8 and 10 year old children, when my sister lived in Aberdeen [ Inverurie ] .

Tours may be a bit boring for an 8 year old who will get restless - so here's some thoughts.

It would be a good start for you to look at the National Tourism Bureau's VisitBritain site for ideas. It's well researched and show most of the popular things to do in the area. Here's an access link:

Up near Lossiemouth there are some caravan areas and i believe lot's of folks go for a brisk swim off the beaches here. There's an RAF airbase up there as well.

For accommodation deals in Scotland try this site. I've bookmarked a few links for you to help out. dig into the last minute offers as you will find some free inclusions which might be useful:

Inverness:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/United-Kingdom/Inverness/
Lossiemouth:http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/United-Kingdom/Lossiemouth/

There's a train ride between Aberdeen and Inverness which should be every 8 year old's dream, which from memory is fairly frequent. And Aberdeen is well connected to most other places via Glasgow or Edinburgh. This link should help you:

Railways:http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

Hope this helps - good luck

Take a train to Kyle of Lochalsh (one of the finest train rides in Britain). You could base yourself there and take bus rides to Skye. Go to www.traveline.org.uk and use journey planner to see travel options. Alternatively you could take a bus to Loch Ness from Inverness - I'm sure an 8 year old would enjoy a bit of monster hunting, perhaps with a boat ride included! Fort Augustus would be a nice place to stay. Contact your nearest tourist information centre for more info - they can pre-book accommodation as well.

It would have to be swimming as north of Scotland is a big wavey blue thing called the sea.
