Life is good here. Where else can you look out your window and see a moose trotting down the street; the Northern Lights racing overhead, and of course Mt. McKinley.

And yes they do pay us to live here. The Alaska Permanent Fund pays each resident who lives and stays here. It requires just over a year to qualify, that includes the 6 mos. residency requirement which must fall between Oct. and Mar.

Depending on profession, there are jobs aplenty (and not those of the red light variety). The medical professions are in great demand, as are office staffing.

As far as anything else, well it depends on where in the state you are. Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas, and has 5 distinct geographic regions. Most major cities are no different than in the lower forty eight, except that winter tends to be 7 or 8 mos. long.

after a full calendar year here Jan1-DEC 1 you will qualify for a PFD..permanent dividend fund. I have been here since august 2005 and have yet to receive one, since I have to be here a full calendar year....but should receive one next time around. It averages approximately $1500-$2000 a person. (per year)
We have a 1800 sq ft foot house on one acre,,cost $285,000 or approximately $2200 per month. I have never seen them give land away here, matter of fact it is very expensive.

It's cold. It's big. You can make good money as a prostitute, since guys outnumber gals by a good margin.
