The egg., the reason is due to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life. Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

The egg, of course, laid by a non-chicken. Beware the MUTANTs!

Now, the real question is, if a tree falls in the middle of the forest, where there is no one to hear it, does it still make a sound?

Holy original question, Batman! Haven't we resolved these yet?

I checked this morning by the farm,
I held Annie while her cherry was warm,
The cocku came first then two eggs followed him,
Poor twin eggs, the cocku never let them in.

So the cocku came first.
