She believes that one shouldn't post political opinions on the Internet without using one's real name. I disagree with her. I think free speech would be 'cooled' without the option to be anonymous; especially if you have an unpopular opinion. She says that you should "stand by your belief" when posting. I think that is stupid, especially in this day and age of lunatics.

Opinions?

Note: I am not asking if she has a right to her own opinion, of course she does. I am just trying to get a general consensus on her opinion.

I generally agree with most of Dr Laura's opinions, but she must have been sipping the kool-aid that day. Take that just a short step further and she could be advocating public disclosure of voting. Like when saddam got his landslide 100% of the vote.

Take a look at what happens here on yahoo which is a anonymous system. You have a bunch of immature people asking a bunch of goofy questions, over and over again, and getting radical with people. So being anonymous has its advantages because you can get really wacky with answers and what you call "free speech".

But if you are held accountable for what you say, what you write, and what you do, you are more than likely going to think twice before you open your mouth or write something that is extremely critical because it can come back to haunt you like it does a politician.

So I think both of you have a point and I also think Dr. Laura has a point as well. I would like some higher controls in Yahoo over stuff that is written because we have some very immature people writing and asking some things that if we knew who they were, they would not be writing it here.

I guess it depends on your motives. I really want to express my opinions and ideas. If I were not as outspoken in real life as I am, I think I would find safety in the anonymity of Yahoo! Answers - and therefore more apt to speak my mind. But many users are here to make a mockery of other people's beliefs. In this case, the anonymity factor is an open door for exploitation.

While I can understand where Dr. Laura is coming from...People with highly suspect agendas will hide behind their anonymity to lie, inflame, and mislead. So, the common man doesn't know who/what to believe about the candidates or issues.

But on the other hand, there are indeed, a lot of nut jobs out there and you could be putting yourself at risk over the most innocuous statement...even if it is true. So, I agree with you.

What are you afraid of? If you can't stand behind you beliefs and opinions what can you stand behind. Free speech was granted to protect both side to the same level.
I think what she is trying to get across is the shield of anonymity shouldn't protect you from make outrageous or false statement.
That's my opinion..

I don't agree with her for the simple reason that I don't think it's ever a good idea to post your full name in any public forum on the internet. It's not that I'm ashamed or unwilling to stand by my beliefs, it's simply a matter of safety.

I don't agree with her on much and if it makes someone more at ease to be anonymous while posting an opinion I would rather that than have them remain silent.

I would gladly post my own name if it weren't for the potential dangers. I don't give a damn what other people think of my opinions. Enough people I know personally understand my beliefs. Many of them disagree or think I'm a kook.

Concur with you. Anonymity gets a more honest opinion on a consistent basis.

I don't agree with her at all. This country has a tradition of anonymous political commentary that predates the revolution.
