My 4.5 month old has umbilical hernia. It became noticable after his umbilical cord stump fell off. For the last month his hernia has been shrinking. It is still there, but most of the time it is flat now instead of sticking out...but it is not an innie yet. What the Dr.s and books said is that most of the time it will correct itself by the age of 2. After then, if it hasn't corrected itself, the Dr will determine if it needs more time or if it needs surgery. My son's navel recently started to turn a little brown like a bruise, and I was worried that the bowels were being strangled. The Dr said that it was just normal discoloration and that he has never heard of an umbilical hernia becoming strangled. I hope that this helps.

Yes my son did, apparently is common, that's what my doctor said. It went away for the most part in a couple of months. He is now 4 months old and he just looks like he has a small outie. The doctors told me they usually go away on their own but if not they can have surgery around 4 years old to correct it.

I actually talked to a Pediatrician about this yesterday at work (I am a RN and had a infant pt with this). She said they don't usually do anything about them unless they haven't gone away when the child is 3+ years. Then its not even necessarily because of a need to but more for the childs self esteem. Or it may get better with time.

It's very common, my baby girl used to have one from birth and now it's almost gone (she's 4 m/o). The ped said that they usually correct themselves by the time they turn 2. Hope that helps!

My daughter has one, she's had it since about 2 months, she's six months old now, the doctor said that its normal for babies to have them until they are at least 2 years old, as long as it isn't getting hard. Then your baby might have to have surgery.

My friend's baby had one. It got pretty huge for a while. It started when he was a couple months old, and lasted for another couple months or so. I think it depends on how bad it is.

My husband still has his from birth and has had no complications so the doctors say to leave it alone. He's 36 BTW.
