My guess was that the U.S. intercepted the Zimmerman telegram which stated that Germany would cede "lost territories" to Mexico (including the state of California) if they helped the war effort.

We had dealt with U-boat attacks on shipping, but when the Lusitania was sunk with a lot of Americans on board, the U.S. entered the war and that alone determined the end of the War, because it was a stalemate up until then.
World War 1 started when Arch Duke Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by Serbians.

The assassination of the Arch Duke Ferdinand started WWI. Basically, Austria blamed Serbia. Serbia, fearing Austria called on I believe Russia, an ally, to help protect them, Austria in turn looked to Germany, an ally, to help them. Thus, Austria declared war in Serbia, Serbia declared war on Austria and Russia and Germany declared war on each other as well as the other nation, either Serbia or Austria. Other nations were brought in according to pacts they had each made. The US was brought in after several sinking of American vessels and to help Britain.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was, in fact, a declaration of war by Japan. that was followed almost immediately with a declaration of war by Germany.
I would state that the Pearl Harbor attacked was egged on by the policies of Roosevelt when he cut off oil supplies to Japan that they needed to survive.

Primarily, it was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Historians tell us we were trying to avoid the war at all costs, but it was inevitable we would eventually join in, what with our reputation at stake and all. You know, the do good big brother who is always handing out humanitarian aid.
