Do you debt or credit an over expense account?

Question

I went on a job interview today and I was quized; if you over spend on the supplies do you debt or credit the account?

I answered but I want to know what you all have to say...

Honestly my friend (controller) and I tend to argue about debits and credits often and well the quiz in a whole ticked me off. I have never been quized in an interview, so I sat there frozen.

I'm more a hands on with my debts and credits... lol

In regards to purchasing supplies, I believe you would debit cash/credit expense whether you over/under purchase.
