It was a bunch of things. Mainly the President Truman knew he could save hundreds of thousands of American lives by doing that instead of conventional landing and hand to hand fighting. After the Battle of Okinawa, where we lost in excess of 14,000 lives to Japanese forces, in less than two months, our best estimates were that we would lose in excess of a million american lives tryng to conquer mainland Japan. Incidently, Japan now has the worlds second largest economy.
