Babies really have no problem crawling on hard floors, they don't have regular kneecaps like you do. It really won't hurt him--we have tile in our kitchen and hallway and my daughter crawled all over it with no complaining. However, you could put down a large area rug (one that won't slide) in your living room for him to spend alot of time on, but believe me he'll be crawling onto the hard floor himself, because babies like to explore different surfaces. He'll be just fine, you'd be surprised how much they can fall on a hard floor and not get seriously hurt!

We have hardwood floors and 3 kids. Our kids never had a problem with them - they have an easier time on the hardwoods than the ceramic tile. Put him in some light pants while he's crawling so that his knees won't get too dried out. He'll pick up the dust/dirt from the floor a little, but he'll be fine.

I also have hard wood floors and my son is eight months old, and not yet crawling... he's being lazy! But, I wouldn't worry about him hurting himself... it took me a long time to realize this but kids hurt themselves, no matter how much we try to protect them from doing it. Hardwood floors are much healthier for everyone, especially babies, than carpeting anyways because hardwood doesn't hold dust mites and inground dirt that the vaccuum may not pick up. Its also best for people with allergies... let him roam around, he'll learn better that way anyways. Good Luck!

I have hardwood floors, I got an area rug so my daughter to play on that, shes 6 months and crawling. I put a blanket on the floor so she could also play there. Babies will get bumps and bruises, its normal.

Kids get hurt. Whether they are on carpet, in a tree, rolling there tricycle down the porch(my smart brother when he was a kid) or if you stick them in a padded room. They will find a way. I would be more concerned with the sharp edges of furniture than the floor. I guess you could pad the whole floor, but are you going to pad the sidewalks too? Youll see that hell be fine, if you really are that concerned, keep him in a walker or playpen and only let him on the floor when your watching him.

if all you have is wood floors, he'll get used to them. He may even want to walk earlier to get off the wood. Just make him wear pants instead of shorts. The foam things are a great idea. Sure, right now he rolls off, but once he is crawling, he won't be rolling anymore. He'll stay on the foam.

I don't understand how a six month old could get hurt on a hardwood floor.

If he's on the floor, it's not like he's going to fall onto the floor - he's already on it.

As far as learning to crawl my sister's baby actually learned to go on her tummy and push with her feet and her upper body would just slide along the floor. Was really cute to watch. It was like she was swimming or something.

How would a large area rug look? We did that at our old house in the living room, it was expensive but it covered a really large part of the room and looked great too. At the house we live in now we have carpet everywhere but the dining room and when my 7 month old crawls in there she usually just keeps right on cruising...doesn't seem to bother her in the least. Hope this helps!

I would put a pillow behind him, so if he falls backward while learning to sit up he doesnt knock his noodle. If he falls sideways it won't be that hard. But, as far as crawling...he'll be ok. I have a friend with hardwood. He'll learn how to navigate on the wood just fine.

We have hard floors too... theyre babies, theyre going to get a few bumps here and there.

I noticed it took my son a while to start crawling though, i think because the floors were hard on his knees...
