usually people just were what ever there personal style is when the uniform comes off.if you ware jeans and a tee shirt, or a polo and jeans whatever. you should dress for yourself, if you think you look good in it go for it!! there are so many styles around my campus, and everyone just mingles together and the style becomes less important then your knowledge.
i guess there are some basics however, cute pj's are a must, you're going to want to hangout in the commons and when you pull an all nighter durning midterms/finals you're going to be like everyone else, including me and ware the pj's to class. so cute pj's are a must.
since picking out cloths is stressful for you, pick a few classy looks, when you just don't want to deal with "fashion" but still want to look cute.
when i first started college i didn't really buy new clothes until after the first week because i wanted to see what everyone else was wearing, but now i just ware what ever i like and feel comfortable in since lectures and study groups can go on forever!
a cute bag or purse really picks up an outfit, so does a cute pair of shoes, so get something that is fun and functional
and remember to smile, it sounds silly but it really does go with everything!! and have fun now is the time to experiment with styles that you were unsure of. plus if you're going to meet people and you can always borrow clothes and try out those styles until you find whats right!!

You should check out your local independant boutique's. That will give you an idea of what is "in" and sometimes you can find really good bargains. I also suggest George jeans from Walmart. They are durable, comfortable and come in a huge variety of styles and sizes, which will make it easier to find ones that fit and look good. They are really reasonably priced too, which is also good.
For tops, you want stylish shirts made from t-shirt material as they wash and wear well. That's going to be important to you. Most University students can't afford to replace stuff that gets wrecked in the wash. You can go with anything from t's to blousy looks in this fabric, and some moer dressy styles are available too for when you are going out.

Go casuall-proffessional. A blouse and a pair of slacks. Or a sweater-vest over a nice blouse, KOHL'S, Abercrombie, ANY MALL should help you out...=) GOOD LUCK!
I go to a private school too and have to wear a uniform.
Try expressing yourself with your favorite colors too!
