Non-whites were considered "colored." However, during the pre-Civil Rights era, most of the United States was not as culturally diverse as it is today. For example, on the east coast, the vast majority of the population was either black or white--"other" really didn't exist in a lot of places.

Interestingly, my mother-in-law is from South America and most people in the US would label her as "hispanic" today, but when she moved to Maryland in the 1950s, that label didn't exist. People considered her white because she is of European and Native American ancestory.

In usa for the duration of segregation there have been no longer rather many rules approximately asian or hispanic people, because of the fact there have been no longer many asians or hispanics in usa around that factor. besides the fact that if i be attentive to that for the duration of South Africa, for the duration of apartheid there have been 3 classes: white (rather 1st type citizen) black (low type citizien) there replace into additionally an 'different' team which replace into form of between the two. Asians and hispanics did no longer have as lots ability as whites did yet they have been taken care of greater effective than blacks have been.

Anyone who was not "white" was considered "colored", so hispanics, asians, native americans and anyone from a mixed racial background had to use the "colored" sections.

I have no idea, but I know I am pretty indifferent to that history, because if you move to Montgomery, Alabama that is all they want to talk about. The wonders of Selma, one of the nastiest and poorly run townships in the country.
