How are winnings paid from international sweepstakes?

I got an email too from an international source saying that I won an international sweepstake. I read the entire email and it was sent to me by someone with a yahoo account however, they were supposedly using the international company's memo. I believe it is a spam. Have you ever applied for an international sweepstake? If you have never applied, then how can you win one??
