I'm in Portland Oregon now and I moved here from Wisconsin 6 years ago. I'm thinking of moving to Denver for graduate school. I don't own a car, so I would use public transit. I'm age 32 and want to live in a safe and trendy urban neighorhood close to downtown - any ideas?

Portland is the best city - don't get me wrong, denver is a great place too.
if you are looking for a great commuter city though, nyc is still the best for that....

If you're in the downtown areas, then you can definitely get by with just public transportation - there's even a new Light Rail line to the southeast/Denver Tech Center area that would give you more choices in housing.

Try this website for more in-depth info on neighborhoods in Denver. One area that's new and trendy is Stapleton, about 10 miles east of the city in the old airport development area. Lots of young urbanites have moved there and it's very self-contained with shops, restaurants and lots of housing choices.

If you do choose Denver, you may never leave - it's a great place (I'm a 16 year resident, moved here from the East Coast and will never go back!)

If you have a little money, lower downtown sounds like exactly what you're looking for. It's a little pricey (because a lot of people want what you want) but not outrageous.

But you really should try to live walking distance from school. The school can no doubt give you housing info. Denver commutes are congested, East Coast style.

Anywhere downtown should be fine, maybe just south of the capital.
