Will my xbox live profile automatically appear when I connect my replacement xbox, or will I have to do something special?

I think "recover account" works in this situation. I would ask microsoft for sure though...if no one here knows the exact way to do it. Do you have a memory card? If so you can take it off that and put it on the new xbox360.

No clue but i got to know, how did it break?
(don't take the following too seriously)

did somebody drop something heavy or a liquid on it, or did you get fustraited because you could not beat a certain level in a game so you decided to take out your anger and smash the 360 with your controler? it's got to be one of those solutions, but when you do get you next 360 and you get angry with the game, don't abuse your 360, take it out on your little sister/brother. That is why parents have more than one child is it not.

I had to send my 360 in for repair but I kept the hard drive...all my profiles was still available with the new unit they sent me..if not just click on recover profile....very easy and all your downloads that you had dowloaded will still be afvailable as well..

you will probably have to recover your account, depends though, are they giving you a new one or fixing your old one? if your getting a new one then you'll have to do what i said above, it's easy though, you go into "recover account" and fill in the questions that are asked and you should be good to go! another thing, if you were able to save your hard drive (or what ever memory device you used), then you should just be able to plug it into your new box and your ready to go! hope that answers your question! : )
