This is a controversial issue that only you can decide. There are pros and cons of using tanning beds vs tanning in the sunlight. Either way, you are harming your skin with harmful UV rays. However, I have always heard it is better to tan than to burn. If you are going to be in the sun on vacation, it may be better for you to tan first so you don't burn from the exposure. Plus if you're hoping to meet someone while on vacation, you want to do what it takes to look sexy...including already having a tan.
Check out this site because not all is as it appears: Since all it really takes is a little time in the sun to provide you with a golden tan, why bother with tanning beds at all. Well, there are several reasons, one of which is privacy. There is no parading around in your bathing suit while your skin is still pale from the long cold winter. Speaking of long cold winters, an added benefit of using a tanning bed is a year round tan despite the season. Since we all look better with a little color in our cheeks, this is a nice perk. Unlike direct sunlight, most tanning beds today have a controlled dosage of ultraviolet rays and the dosage you do get is spread out over several tanning bed sessions. Tanning beds are accessible. As their popularity grew, so did the salons. It is almost impossible not to find a tanning bed salon nearly anywhere that you travel.
Also the second site says: While the primary reason for both Americans and Europeans to use a tanning bed is cosmetic, there are many other reasons why they are used. Because of the release of endorphins while tanning, it is common for people to tan simply because it makes them feel good. Also, most tanning beds generate a large amount of heat, including infrared, which has deep penetrating action that can relieve minor muscle aches. People who use tanning beds for these reasons will often tan all year long, typically once or twice a week.
If I were you, I would go ahead and tan first so I could feel extra confident in my appearance. Plus if you tan first, then you can come back from vacation looking even better instead of risking coming back with a terrible sunburn and the awful peeling skin that comes with it.

Tanning will give you cancer and wrinkles. Plus tanning is the same thing as burning just a different color.
