If you have them up full volume, then yes. iPod headphones are inner ear ones and the music is playing right up against the ear drum, if you had them up too loud for too long you could damage your hearing.

Hiya

Yes they can be, if used too long or too loud.

Inside your ears there is a very delicate system of small hairs that oscillate with differing frequencies that travel over them. These fine hairs make sense of noise, frequency and enable you to hear things correctly. When healthy they stand in straight lines like soldiers.

These fine structures can be permanently damaged by excessive noise over a long period of time and cause the hairs to cross over each other, get tangled and not operate in the correct way. It can for example cause tinnitus ( a permanent ringing or buzzing in the ear).

Similarly prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause damage and scarring to the eardrum and deafness (Roger Daltry of The 'Who' is a good example) standing in front of gigantic speakers at concerts is pretty bad for you.

The problem is that in the short term you may not realise the damage they can do with excessive use or volume - it kinda creeps up on you some years later and is surprise surprise irreversible!

I myself at 53 am paying the price for heavy headphone use 35 years ago. So my advice is it's ok, but not for too long and not at too loud a volume. (both of which I ignored all those years ago!!

All ear/headphones are bad for you if the volume is to high!! Just keep the volume down slightly and you will be fine!!

if you have them over 80 decibels for more than half an hour then you can begin to damage your hearing (it gets a little bit more complicated than that).

In terms of hygiene that could be an issue with sticking something dirty into your outer ear but generally most people's defence systems can handle this.

Neither of these would be specific to Apple either!

headphones can concentrate the music/ sound in your ears

yeah - that's what they're supposed to do - BUT

unless you want hearing aids by age 30 - do not CRANK them up to sonic shock level

yes - the issue is that you have two speakers in very close proximity to your eardrums - most people have a tendency to turn them up in loud places (subway, the bus, etc) so you have direct sound pressure on your ears.
extended listening thru headsets also causes your ears to desensitize, making it harder to hear when you take them off.

yes, you can deafen yourself and if the headphones don't fit, it can hurt to keep them in too long
