for years i have had an idea to open a restaurant themed around the "justice league" but my girlfriend said that it was a bad idea because most people don't know about the "justice league"

that sounds really cool actually..

You would need permission though as you would be making money off of someone else's creation...DC would probably ask for a percentage or you would have to pay a huge liscensing fee. or you could just put posters/comics/merchandise etc. up on the walls considering you would be the owner of that material.

There are ways around the rights issues. In the case of the Gotham City diner they grew the theme around NYC and had little Batman things around the place. DC can't own the rights to the name Gotham City because it's such a common phrase.

If you theme it around the Justice League specifically, you're definitely going to have legal rights issues to deal with.

(Both Adam West and Burt Ward have dined at the Gotham City diner)

If you can even get the rights to those characters it's going to cost you a lot.

As for people not know who the Justice League are... maybe they don't know those characters by that name, but once they see who they are most people with know them. Visually most can tell you what Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman look like.

I think another problem besides if your target demographic is big enough, is whether you would be able to get the rights to use their likenesses.
