I've applied and interviewed at a school for my Psy.D. (Clinical Psychology). The program accepts up to 27 people per year and interviewed roughly 75-80. I was just informed that I am on the alternate list. I'm wondering what my realistic odds are for acceptance. I know it depends on financial aid, rejections, etc. My question is how OFTEN does someone reject a grad school. Do I have a 50/50 chance, or more like a 10% chance? Anyone know?

Many people apply to multiple programs, and often people get into more than one. I got accepted at three places, so there were two schools that accepted someone from their wait list when I turned down their offers.

Also, don't think that just becase you were waitlisted you were a second tier candidate. Many programs take people based on who fits with the faculty members who are next in line to take in a grad student. So if the person who thinks you would be a good fit with thim is not at the front of the line, their picks only go through if the faculty who are at the front of the line don't take thier prospective students.

If in the end you don't get in this year, take a year for yourself, volunteer with a counseling center, and reapply. I applied once, decided I didn't like the offer I got, and took a year just hanging out and working only enough to pay the bills and have enough money to hang out with my friends. It was a great year and I was refreshed and ready to dig into my grad program when it came around. And now I am really glad that I live in Chicago instead of taking the offer in CA.

People often apply to multiple schools so not accepting the admissions offer is relatively common. Is the school considered to be prestigious? Schools with higher prestige levels have less rejections from prospective students. As the prestige factor goes down, the rate goes way up (i.e. many students treating the program as a "safety school" in case they don't get admitted where they really want to go).

Sorry I can't specifically answer your question - the answer varies tremendously from school to school. You can try asking someone there about this.

I can't answer specifically, but I do personally know of 2 cases where people got in off the wait list. Good Luck.
