hi, my sister had a preemie and he was in the ncu for a month, when his cord came off my mom told her to tell the nurses to put a bandage over it so it wouldn't be an outie - the nurses never did and they told my sister that it doesn't matter if you put a bandage or not, if it's going to be an outie it's going to be one, is this true because i put one on my full term baby and his did not turn out an outie but my nephews is an outie now and my sister is really upset. does anyone know if not putting the bandage was a bad call on the nurses part?

There is nothing you can do to help make your baby's belly button one way or another. It has to do with how it was cut at birth and how much of the cord was left, etc.

Putting a bandage or covering the belly button with anything will NOT keep the child from having an outtie. The shape of the belly button is based on many things. The main cause of an outtie is the way the cord is cut and clamped at birth. Also, an outie can be a sign of a herniated belly button.
Most outtie's will correct themselves before the age of 5. If not, check with your pediatrician.

No, putting a bandage over the belly button does not help it be an inney. My daughter is three in a half and has an outie but my son has just turned four weeks has an inney. I think it all depends on the way the doctor cuts the cord, I had to different doctors with both my children. The doctor I had with my daughter my sister in law had with two of her kids and they to have outies.

There is nothing that a doctor, nurse or mama does to a belly button that determines it's shape, size or whether it's an inny or an outie. That's an old wives tale. The shape of a belly button is totally genetic so the nurses were right. On a newborn, you should just leave the cord stump alone until it falls off and then give the baby normal baths. They really don't need much special attention.

first off as a pre-med student i can tell you that putting a bandage on a stump is a no-no. that will just help to set up an infection and the navel needs air to it. if his belly button was going to be an outie, a bandage was not going to help it become an innie. she doesnt need to be upset. in most cases with outies, it comes from where the child ate too much and stretched their stomach along with crying too much. when newborns cry, the navel moves out so that could have also caused it. so no, the nurses were right in not putting a bandage on it. would you have rather him had an outie or an infection???

Putting a bandage on the belly button will not make a difference. I have a four month old and I did not bandage the belly button and he has a innie. It can go either way. Tell your sister Outies can be very cute too!

Putting a bandage on a healing belly button is definetly not safe! The baby can easily get an infection because it needs air to heal!
That said, no, putting a bandage on healing belly button will not effect whether it is an "innie" or "outie".

No it wasn't a bad call. It truley doesn't matter if you put a bandage on or not. Both my kids looked like they were going to have an outie but they didn't. I am sure it will go away, how old id the baby?

I believe outie belly buttons can be an umbilical hernia, but some are not and it is genetics.
My son was also in the nicu and I did not put anything on his button and it is an innie.
I don't think it matters, but it dose'nt hurt to put something on it when the cord comes off.

Your belly button is determined by your genes, and not on bandages or even the way the cord was cut. The fact that your nephew is an outtie is merely a coincidence.
