I have this problem with my car when it idles my RPMs will go up and down between 1000 rpm and 1300 rpm. I was told it is a vacuum leak but I dont want to take it in to be fixed when it will cost me around $80 if not more. So what would be the best way to find out where the leak is?

A trick an old mechanic told me about and I tried with success is to use a small propane torch. After you start the car, turn on the torch WITHOUT lighting it and place the end of the torch near vacuum hoses and connections. If you have a vacuum leak the car will run normal when the end of the torch is placed near it.

Disconnect vacuum hoses, one at a time, and plug the opening to see if the idle stays put.

If that is the problem.
