I am currently 36 weeks preg. My doc set me up to be induced on April 5. I will be 38 w and 2 d. I have really high fluid and he said this is the best way to go about the birth. The baby already weighs 7 lbs and is healthy. My cervix is just starting to soften and I was just wondering what to expect with the induction. I am so nervous and scared. My hubby has kidney dialasis that day from 11am-3pm. If I am in at 7 do you think he will miss the birth? I really want him there. He obviously cant miss the dialasis. Any help or support to a scared first time mom greatly appreciated!!

Especially being your first birth, I do not expect that your baby will come out before 3:00. I was induced with my first because my water broke, my second because she was eight days late, and my third because my labor did not progress well. When you go to the hospital, you may get a cream inserted into your vagina called Cervadil...It helps to soften the Cervix more and start contractions. I only had this with my third. With the other two I got Pitocin. They put an IV in the top of your hand, and start a Pitocin drip. It starts slow and they gradually increase it. It sometimes takes a while for the contractions to start. It helps them start and become regular and strong. I was in labor 23 hours with my first, 6 with my second, and 28 with my third. You can't feel the drip going in...relax and get a lot of rest the days before your induction, especially the night before. Don't be scared. Everything will be okay. I think that at 3:00 when he gets out you will still be getting induced...just in case is there someone else that you could have with you that you are close to? You may want to plan this just in case you go quick...which some women do.

Are you being admitted at 7 AM for the induction? I don't think your husband will miss the birth, but babies do things on their own time.

I was admitted at 7 AM for an induction in 2005, and my baby was born at 4:12 PM. The nurses were amazed that it went that fast, and it was my fourth baby (first babies usually take longer.)

During the induction they just give you more of the hormone your body would make naturally to go into labor. Don't worry! There are lots of resources online for this. Check out www.babycenter.com Best of luck!

First of all, see if your doctor can change the date to accommodate your husband's dialysis. If not, you probably won't deliver before later that day, maybe the next, although you never know. Once you get there, they will put in cervadil, which is a cervix thinning suppository. That usually is given 12 hours to do its job. The doctor may break your water once labor has started. If all goes well, the induction will work and you will deliver vaginally. Remember, though that an induction is not a natural process and sometimes it doesn't work. You shouldn't feel anything different than a woman who goes into labor herself. Other than contractions that could be stronger than a woman who has gone into labor on her own. you shouldn't go thru anything different.

I was induced at 5pm on a Wednesday and had my son at 2:53 the next afternoon. You can never tell how long that fun process will last!! The induction was a pill on my cervix. I thought that it was going to be some big production. Nope. Just a pill . Talk to your doctor. Talk to your nurse when you get there too. They are usually a bigger help than the doctors are!! Good luck!1

My second and fourth were inductions (12 and 10 days over respectively). The first induction they broke my water at 10AM then waited for contractions...started a Pitocin drip at 11:45AM and I had my son in my arms by 4:30PM. Very hard and very fast labor! The other induction began in the morning and I labored all day...they finally stopped that night to let me rest (I was super-exhausted). They started again the next morning and I had him at 12:30PM. So even inbductions in the same person are different...It depends on how ripe your cervix is for an induction, and what they use to induce. Do a web search for "Bishop's score" to find out the criteria they use and how likely your induction is to work...it depends on how dilated and effaced you are and the babys station in your pelvis, among other things...

My induction with my son was scheduled for 7 a.m. I got there and they didn't start doing much until 8 a.m.

I don't remember a lot of the details (mommy brain!!) but I do know they gave me my first pitocin at around 12:30 noon or so, and they gave me the lowest dose to start out with.

By around 4 pm. I was dilated to 5 and got an epidural. They told me to go ahead and nap since it would still be awhile, and everyone left to go eat. I wasn't in any pain until I had a huge contraction, my friend went to go get the nurse, who checked me and I had gone from 5 cm to 10 cm in literally 15 minutes. Everyone came rushing back in, and 3 pushes later my son was born, and I was in shock! I was supposed to be napping!! LOL.

Anyhow everyones inductions are different, if its your first baby it will probably take much longer, but you never know. My induction was a breeze and I would do it over a million times.

GOOD LUCK! and congratulations!

Since this is your first, and they usually like to take their time, he just might make it...but from my personal experience, I was induced with my second child at 10am and he was here by 3:30pm. Maybe if you run into some traffic on the way to the hospital and get there maybe around 8:30, fill out the paper work extra slow, and get settled into your room at an even slower pace, he'll make it! Congrats and best wishes! :-)

you can never tell, everyone is different and your body could do a lot from now until then (thinning out, dialating etc...) that will cause you to go faster.
my sister was induced at 41 weeks at 7/8 am and by 2pm the baby was here- but i also now a lady i worked with was induced at 37 weeks at 8am and was there for 48hours and nothing she ended up needing a c-section.
it all depends

I would suggest postponing the induction for a day. I am sure your doctor would understand that u want hubby there and he needs to be there. He doesnt want to miss the birth of his child and u need him there for support.
Talk to your doc. He will accomodate I am sure. One day isnt gonna make a difference with your delivery but, it will make all the difference in the world to your hubby and you.
Good luck and congrats!

I was induced with my first daughter. It depends on how they are inducing you on what to expect. I was induced with potocin. They gave me an IV and that is how I got the potocin. I think that being induced is more painful because your contractions don't stop. I was not induced with my second daughter and the pain was not as bad as the first daughter. I went in to be induced at 8am and had my daughter at 3:52pm so i was in labor about 8 hours after being induced.
