I have a 2003 Olds Alero. The AC is not working correctly. When I turn it on the highest setting it works, but when I turn it down just a couple of notches, it turns it off. What could this be?

All cars with air conditioning use a resistor block called the 'blower motor resistor" to alter the amount of voltage that goes to the blower motor depending on the switch position. The 'fail safe' mode of the blower motor resistor is to fail so that only the high speed is available; that way if it burns out you will still be able to use the defroster. In 'high' position a full 12 volts is available to the motor.

it would be highly unlikely that the switch on the dash is bad. It is almost always the blower motor resistor that goes out. You'll need to have the problem diagnosed prior to replacement but in all probability it will be the blower motor resistor. You can call around to the shops in your area to price it out. They'll understand what you mean when you ask how much it is to replace a blower motor resistor on your car

hope that helps
