I have never been to or had a school or college prom and l would love to be involved in organising one. How should I get started and is it worth it? Just any tips or experiences please.

You need help.

Work out how much things cost... ie DJ, Light hire, bands (aussie backpacker clubs are a great source of good covers bands if in London ie the walkabout in Shepherds bush or Redback Tavern in Acton).

Also you need to work out budgets for drinks and ice say bins of ice.

Themes and decorations...

Get accounts students to work out budgets...

Media students to work out lighting.

Graphic design students to work on the flyers (do a competition for best designs) but you have to make printable artwork say with a bleed (the extra bit that gets cut off and writing away from edge for gillotein).

Work out wiring etc.

And security (thinking no weapons or dodgey stuff not chaparones to stop kissing)

Possibly use school printing facilities or say a printers.

Maybe do deals like they get adverts on notice boards for reducing printing costs.

You need to have lots of back ups in place ie spare this and that and assume things can and will go wrong so see backup plans in place.

Make sure draped sheets etc for decos are flame retardant sprayed..

MAKE SURE NO GLASS ANYWHERE.

Find out suit, tux dress hire places and maybe work out a discount deal for your students if lots going to the same spot.

Sawdust on floor helps soak up dinks... think hamster shavings.

Make sure you get rid of all yellow/white light...

And only light with disco lights, get UV lighing in and DEFF a smoke amchine or your lights look crap.

Best light set up would inc some UV strip or flood lights.

And at least a pair of barel scanners ie the long black box disco lights with a barrel of mirrors at the end.

With a smoke machine these look great.

Also if the room is bright lit nobody will dance you need to darken it down and add lots of smoke for atmosphere.

You need plenty of time and bakc up plans if band or dj dont turn up.

If in the UK get a magazine called The Stage.

Also a fancy dress theme or possibly if no tux a foam party could be cool.

Also with uv lighitng you can bluetack uv flourescnt paer everywhere that glows... or bits of flourescent acrylic (poss broken scraps looks like glittering gem stones.

And professional photographers...

You should start by talking to your student government maybe they have some ideas of how to go about it, or can steer you towards a club that might be interested in helping, or even full on put the prom on with you. Once you have permission get a committee (perhaps your friends and family) to help you with the planning...That's a great idea by the way. I would love to have a prom at my college.

well to the previous answerer how rude!!!! and as for the question...I'm not exactly sure because I've been wondering the same thing myself, but I think it would only involve talking to the campus activities council & then posting posters. of course you'd have to set up where & when, pay for use/decorations/if there might be food & have to get the word out, but I think it would definitely be worth it! Also, I was wondering if they do college yearbooks? That would be so awesome too. Hope this helps. (=
