My baby just turned 4 months and I know he should be giggling and squealing in delight, however this does not happen very often. I try really hard to make him laugh and squeal, but all he really does is smile a lot, I barely get a laugh. Is this normal, is something wrong that he is not laughing all the time by now?

All babies develop at different rates. It will happen more and more as time goes by. If your pediatrician were worried, he/she would mention something. If you are worried, mention it to him/her at your next appt.

I had the same worries with my son. When he was about four months old he barely even smiled. I worried that something was wrong. Now, he is six months old and he is totally smiling all the time but he doesn't usually laugh, just once in a while. I think it might just be his personality. Some babies are more serious than others and there is nothing wrong with that!

I have a 6 month old and he did that sparadically at first. It was great the first time I made him laugh. Give you baby another month or so and he will be laughing a lot more. The first thing that I do in the evening when I get him home in the evening is make him laugh. Now he sees our dogs walk around him and he laughs at them. It is great!!!

Dont get so caught up on what they say your baby should be doing. You'll worry yourself to death. I remember when I was a new mom. All my aunts told me that when my baby smiled it was just gas!!!!! I was devestated. LOL Im sure your babys fine. They dont all do the same things at the same time. Thats what makes them unique and yours. I have 6 of my own they all talked, walked, crawled and LAUGHED at different times. Just love him!

It can be very normanl and sometimes they will start doing things and then stop abruptly. They can only learn so many new things at one time so he will do it in his own time.

If he was early or premature at all he may develop later than other kids.

If you are worried about Autism, you cannot usually tell that early anyway. It sounds like he makes eye contact with you just not alot of sounds yet, trust me they will come soon!

Don't worry!

my cousin has a 5 month old baby, and it takes forever to get her to crack a smile. most of the time she looks at everyone with a frown on her face lol. i guess some babies just have different personalities, i don't think it necessarily means that there is something wrong. im sure your baby is just fine :-)

My daughter is almost 6 mos and didn't start laughing until almost 5 months. Now she will mostly just growl at people and then laugh at herself. Your baby is completely normal. Don't worry. Soon you won't be able to keep him quiet. Congrats.

if you feel there is something wrong with your baby you should deffinately contact your pediatrician. If there is something wrong the sooner they find it the better. BUT he is just figuring the world out. and has no concept of what is supposed to be funny. Maybe he has a different sense of humor. It will all come to be!

As others have said, each baby develops at his/her own pace, so it's probably nothung to worry about. Another thing to look at is whether your baby is on track in other areas. Most likely if there's a problem, he'll be delayed in other areas as well, but if it's just this one thing, it's probably nothing. But ask your dr. if it concerns you.

Babies don't start getting personalities until between 5 to 7 months... If your baby is smiling..that's probably a good thing
