They are wedges, made of leather wrapped in velvet, and lace up to the ankle. Anyone have any suggestions other than returning them or giving them away?

Your best bet is to go to a local shoe repair shop. They will have the best professional grade stretchers and know what type to use and if the shoes can be stretched properly or if it will ruin the shoe. Not all shoes are stretchable. Cost is minimal, usually not more than $10 depending on the type of shoe. It is worth it if you like the shoes enough to want them stretched.
Hope this is helpful.
