i've recently moved into my 1st house and want to brighten up the garden with some lovely flowers, which are the best ones to get? Seeds or already grown flowers. Thx

Since you are asking, it seems that spring has arrived where you are .... so I would get:
Roses - pink, white, yellow (bushes)
Evening scented stock - lovely scent (white)
Lillies - pink day lillies would be nice (bulbs)
and some Shirley Poppies which are lovely in the summer ...
Sweet Peas .... make beautiful bouquets for the table with roses, Baby's breath (white and misty), and Love-in a-mist (blue)
Nicotiana - either the traditional white which has a beautiful scent or magenta colored
and you could tuck in various colored Petunias which will sit nicely at the feet of the others which are all tall .... don't know what is already in your garden ...

with the exception of the roses and lillies, all can be raised from seed .... but if your local market has little plants, by all means buy some

Cheers!

Considering most hardy perennial flowers from a garden centre have been grown for a couple of years before you buy them, I'd consider these the most cost effective and reliable buy.

Plugs are good if you "grow them on". Seeds are hit and miss and will either yield loads of what you want (often too many) or hardly any, if at all, especially if you are inexperienced.

Why not borrow a good encyclopedia of plants and flowers and sit down with a cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and handful of post it notes. Then find some you like the look of, check they'll grow in your garden and then buy some young plants at a garden centre or nursery.

You can add to them at your leisure and move them about in the Spring or Autumn if they turn out to be in the wrong spot.

The best thing you can do for any plants is cultivate your soil properly. Dig it, knock it about with a fork or spade. Work some well rotted compost or manure in if it's been left un-gardened for a while. Get the weeds out and keep them out when you've planted up. Mulch the surface to keep the weeds down and the moisture in.

Most of your most productive gardening will be done over a cup of something hot and a good gardening book. The more you learn the better your results will be.

I hope you have loads of lovely plants in your new garden and really get bitten with the gardening bug.

All the best!

I myself like rooted plugs. You can buy them by the tray at all garden centers. Takes the guess work out of how much is coming up. For the spring, I always planted coleus, assorted colors. They stay pretty long through the summer as long as they aren't in direct afternoon sun, in the south anyway. I also favor Red salvia and yellow marigolds. That's pretty showy. There are different flowers for diffeent regions. you can go to the website below and find out what flowers do well in your region, the lighting, watering and even ideas for patterns in your garden. It gives you any information you need. It's also a great source to buy flowers. I've used them for years.
