Piston rings or new pistons if the cylinders are worn. Bearings for the crank, rods and camshaft. Lifters, valves, oil pump, maybe a cam chain if it's an overhead cam. You might need new valve seats. You might need the cylinders bored, the head planed, the crank balanced, and the valve guides knurled or replaced. It's not a "buy a rebuild kit" job.

well there's actually a list of things to replace and a few things you have too know first. like is it a cast iron block with cast iron heads or is it all aluminum. has it been rebuilt before or is this the first time. all aluminum headed engines must have the head bolts replaced. all torque to yeild bolts must be replaced. if the engine is cast and has been rebuilt before its a good idea to replace the head, main and rod bolts and maybe while your at it the cam bolt. these bolts can be stretched and cause much problems. there's also the complete gasket sets, plugs, wires, oil, filters, oil pump, valve job's, rings, main bearings, rod bearings, cam bearings, any questionable vacumm hoses, antifreeze, theremostat. if you plan on using the same cam look at the lifters to make sure their not worn, its just best to replace the take the chance. There's a long list of things to look at like i said. best bet is to find a complete list of kits that shows what's in it and then just buy the stuff that's not in it. if in doubt about a part replace it. if your not sure on somestuff and your doing a complet rebuild ask you machine shop that's doing the machine work what else you should get or replace. hope this helps and good luck.

Everything that doesn't work in the current engine, plus all new seals, gaskets, spark plugs, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, plug wires...is this enough?

buy a rebuild kit..
the wear your engine has will determine what kind of rebuild you do
