Don't spend much on it but make it clean and neat. Can you extend it? Don't do it but have a sketch or something done to show it. Whatever you do will be ripped out by new owners so just get the paint brush going to clean it up

If it hasn't been modernised since 1974 it may need a new kitchen and bathroom. But I don't know without inspecting it.
Cheap and easy things to do to make sure your house is saleable:
1. Carpets shouldn't be very dark. Nor should they be patterned.
2. The bathroom and the kitchen should have lino flooring, NOT carpet.
3. Some people like wooden laminate flooring to the lounge. It's up to personal taste. Don't bother with it if you have a good carpet in there currently.
4. Have the place clean and tidy. If it's messy it doesn't look good, and people downvalue the house in their mind because of it.
5. Don't have pets. I'm currently viewing property. One place had a dog there. My fiancee, being slightly afraid of dogs paid more attention to him than the house, and so wasn't really sure what she thought of it. Another place, although it had no pets at home, smelt of them. It didn't smell good.

Paint is always helpful. The latest boost for homes value is remodeling of kitchen or baths. Removing cheap old style paneling will also bring a house into the present day theme.

Just bring the house up to date, don't mess with the structure because sometimes aged is better than brand new, just focus on all repairs and all safety issues, because the safer the property is the more a consumer will pay.

Make sure your decor isnt too individual. stick with pastels and creams. Then potential buyers dont worry about decorationg immediatly. Most importantly make sure it is clean.
