Actually, it wasn't the age difference so much as it was the fact that he married his first cousin.
E.A. Poe lived w/his Aunt Maria & her daughter Virginia off & on starting in 1829. At this time, he was 20 and Virginia was 7yrs old. He secretly married Virginia 6 years later when she was 13. He married her a second time -publicly a year later.

So, the faux pas was the close relation and the fact that he pretty much lived w/this girl as a sister and had known her from the time she was very young.
At that point in history, while 13 was a young age to marry an older man, it wasn't unheard of. It wasn't taboo or even illegal as it is today.

The bride in question was *way* younger than EAP was. Historical records say she was all of 13 when she was married in what was definitely an arranged marriage designed in part to "straighten out" Edgar Allan.

So I think it was mainly the age difference, in combination with Edgar Allan's own reputation for being on drugs, and having a spotty work history.

I dont know but all of his stories are in my 8th grade text books and I think that mans a phyco!!! 0_0
