i have been called both and i really dont see that big of a difference, especially in the music

emo is whiny boys crying and complaing about not getting enough airtime on MTV to cheesy pop beats, while punk is original upbeat riffs and not caring what others think

I really don't see why people are called emo I mean it's a f%*king genre of music for god's sake. Nobody is Tom or Harry anymore it's the "jock" or the "goth"
It's makes me so mad.....I know that really didn't answer your question but I thought it needed to be said.

Theres a big diffrence. just listen to the dead kennedys and compare them to hathrown hights.Dead kennedys is way more harder and more way more crazyer. And hathrown heights are little babies that whine.Dead kennedys are the punk band. And hathrown height is emo.PUNK RULES .EMO SUCKS!

Punk is dead. What is WAS - it was being rebellious against the mainstream. Today, punk is just another fashion faux-pa.
Emo is just ghey. Skinny, whiney kids who want to be gothic but want to listen to AFI, Deathcab and crap like that.
