My stepfather always went to a local jeweler who happened to be certfied (if that's what you call it) in grading coins as well. You could check your local area for coin dealers and jewelers who may be able to help you out. The only thing he couldn't get graded on site was a dime that was special for some reason. At that point the jeweler gave him the name of a man in a nearby city and we set up an appointment and drove up there to have the coin graded.
I'd say avoid mailing or sending your coins away as well, it's a very risky proposition.
Good luck!

This man explains that, sorta, you don't send them anywheres.
http://www.acoin.com/grading.htm
Just look at them and make a ballbark from that, if you want to sell the coin as Unc,Au,XF,EF,VF,VF,F,VG,G well that is the call. It is pretty much opinion of the observer.
I have seen a Near Mint get pro graded as Fine one day and sold the next day as Mint Proof with fancy box and everything one is willing to pay for.
Take to a Federal Bank, if you want to take a chance.US Minted Gold Coins will be confiscated or can be, that is the law of 1934.
I would not feel comfortable mailing coins of any value, keepsake, intrisic, monetary, by common postal services.
