Many businesses that sell wood and coal stoves also sell bagged coal. Here is how I found a list of California retailers:

Do not enter a city, but choose CA from the drop down list and slick on search. The next page that comes up will offer hundreds of towns and cities in the state. Click on the one nearest to you. The next page that pops up will not offer any specific results, but it will offer "Most popular matching catagories" with the catagory of "Stoves Wood Coal Etc Retail" as a selection. Click on it and you will get all of the retail outlets in the area. If you live in a small town, you may need to do several searches for retailers in surrounding towns.
