The first recorded lore of vessels hark-ens back to early sailing times. In those times the European monarchy's felt that ships possessed an elegant and refined quality, like a women. So they named and prefaced some names with feminine reference. HMS, her majesties ship, later her majesties steamship was what the Brits did. The Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and others did similar things. All out of the lure and mystery of the sea and the ships that sailed them like the love for a woman. And if you ever wish to be really freaked out. Go to where they are sinking and old steel hulled ship for and artificial reef. If the water is deep enough you will hear as the ship sinks, a "weeping and wailing" as it "dies". You will swear it sounds just like a woman's agonizing cry. I was on a few these when I was a commercial diver and it never failed to make a shiver go down my spine. Just a fun fact side note. If you listen to a train as it comes upon a grade crossing it will sound its horn in a 2 long, 1 short and 1 long sequence. That is the Morse code letter "Q". It goes back to England and the Queens motor yacht. If the Queen were aboard the captain would sound the Morse code "Q" to notify other vessels that the Queen "was" aboard and to clear the way.

i would say putting them in context to females is a generalization. i would say that the majority of ship owners are males, and since they LOVE their ships, and LOVE women as well, then they refer to their ships as "Her name's the SS whatever".. so we're probably just used to hearing the feminine side, but who knows, referring a ship in a masculine manner won't throw you in jail right?

Because with boats, like women, the rigging costs more than the hull.

Probably for the same reason straight men name all their toys after women: because calling them guy names would make them look less than masculine?
