iPod is the only brand that comes in a stock Mac-compatible version right now. There are homebrew programs that will enable many competing brands to work with Macs, if you don't mind potentially voiding your warranty, but you have to realize that Macs have about a 4% market share for computers, and the collective iPod competition has a 30% share of the portable music player market (which drops to a mere 10% combined when looking at just the high-end units with regular hard-drives). That'd leave at most a potential pool of 1.2% of the total market and a meager 0.4% of the hard-drive market available from which to build a customer base. iPods are probably the only brand that can afford to concentrate on Mac-based support right now, especially since most Mac users would go straight to the iPod just because it'd keep everything within the family.
Just remember, if you do go with an iPod, you will need to buy yours directly from Apple, either online or through one of their stores. They do not sell the Mac-compatible version through other retailers. Also, while the Mac version can be switched over for use on Windows, for some odd reason the mass-market Windows version is not capable of being converted for use on a Mac. Seems illogical, but that's the official word.

They both are great, if you don't like to be like everyone else get the Sansa mp3. If you do want to be like everyone else get the iPod.
