Pervert is both a noun and a verb. The noun refers to a person who perverts (verb) something.

Used as a verb, the word pervert means to use some faculty for a purpose for which it was not designed. For example, a dictator who uses the criminal justice system to jail his opponents is perverting justice. In like manner, a president who uses the IRS to harass his opponents is perverting a system that is supposed to generate revenue to run the government.

The most common usage applies to sexual practices. Perversion refers to sexual practices that are outside the normal range. Almost everyone would agree that necrophilia is a perversion. Several years ago, almost everyone considered homosexuality a perversion. Today, some people think it is normal.

A pervert is someone in whom the psycho-sexual norms have been seriously altered.

Broadly based, it could encompass anyone who gets sexual satisfaction out of watching a woman smoke a cigarette as well as those who only achieve sexual satisfaction when dominating or coercing someone.

The classical sense is someone whose psycho-sexual norms have been seriously altered to the point where they become a danger to others in seeking their own sexual satisfaction, i.e. rapist, child molestor.

Because sexual norms change over time, once taboo activities such as looking at pornography, engaging in deviant (think S&M) behavior, and having 'strange' sexual fantasies (other than ones involving coercion) can still get one labeled as a 'pervert', but that is used more as a way to identify one's 'kinkiness' rather than to assess one's danger to society. Because of this, most true 'perverts' are now considered 'predators', to distinguish and emphasis their potential harm to society.

In latin *vert* is from the same root as versus, version, reverse, inverse, etc.
It means to turn.
Per is "by/with/to" in the sense of "trough or by the method of"
So something perverse is something twisted, bent (Turned) from what it should be.
A pervert is someone twisted from what they should be.

It is normally only applied in the moral/immoral sense to people. But as perversion the word is still used in other areas. (Perversion of logic)

It works as noun, adjective and verb.
