Repression is NOT being conscious of said thought.

From the way I see the two terms used, I would suspect that "suppression" (which I am too often guilty of mis-spelling as "surpression") is something imposed by an outside force, whereas, "repression" is self-generated and comes from within, motivated by the person's own fears and insecurities.
An example of "suppression" would be a parent, teacher or spouse not letting someone practice and/or exercise an artistic talent. "Repression" would that person's OWN reluctance to practice or exercise that talent.

I'd say suppression is holding something down, and keeping it from being expressed. Repressing is doing the same by putting it back where it came from.

Suppression is the conscious inhibition of an impulse...that is holding back.
Repression on the other hand is the rejection from consciousness of painful or disagreeable ideas, memories, feelings, or impulses..so it's more of denial.
