Just as an aside, I have to laugh at the ignorance of the Americans who answered this question. Yes, the US is the ONLY country in the world with a president. Wake up!
By the way Blackboard: how can you speak for the political situation in ANY country after just visiting as a tourist. You experienced a totally different South Africa from those who were born and raised there.
To answer your question: the truth is Thabo Mbeki does not care. In his weekly letter this week he states that the whites are scared of the blacks. I think he ignores a really serious issue though: I think EVERYONE is scared of the CRIMINALS, it's not a white/black issue, but as usual, he paints it this way. I say: vote with your feet. Get out. Move to other countries. There are many countries who need skilled, hard working people and there IS a better life out there. South Africa is a beautiful country (I was born there and now live in Canada), but it isn't beautiful enough for me to force my 2 year old child to have to save my wife's life. Pathetic. A government's primary role is to protect EVERY member of society, weak and strong. The South African government has failed to do this for the past 10 plus years. They do not consider things a problem (look at their quiet diplomacy policy in regards to Zimbabwe). Get out while you can, is all I can say.
LOL: Africa is a country!! Good one!!

This is terrible but the first step to solving this problem is admitting that you have one. Until your president does that it will never be sorted. But why should he be worried - he has a R19 million secure wall around his house!

By the way- this is Yahoo! UK and Ireland and as one other person said, it is not only the US that has a president. Read the question properly

I have recently returned from your beautiful scenic country SA I was in Capetown. Until you actually face the fact that your fellow man in equal your country will have trouble. I found the people waiting on tables etc., fantastic and were amazed when I asked them how they were doing - they were astonished. I did not get a smile out of the white south african (sorry if I cannot say that). However, this does not mean that I condone what is going on out there - your statistics are way above ours in the UK and I find that worrying to say the least. I hope your nation decides to make all equal and soon - and I wish you and yours the very best of luck.

I watched blood diamond a few nights ago, it broke my heart, its a true story, I can't believe all the barbaric murders going on in such a BEAUTIFUL country.

My sister married a south African guy, they moved there and they owned a backpackers place. One night a group of guys broke into her house, held a gun to her head and demanded to know where her cash a jewellery was. She said having a gun held to your head at point blank range is terrifying, needless to say, she moved back to London.

YES the government needs to clean up its act, people are being murdered for no reason.

why dont you call one of the magazine companies, they may be VERY interested in your story.

Bush is...............I cant even put it into words. He has caused tremendous pain the world over. Problem is, South Africa hasnt got anything he wants - its got no oil, its got nothing but pain and suffering and he's to thick upstairs and too selfish to address this issue. If he did it could do him so much good. The power is so in the wrong hands...........I wish him no good.

the truth of the matter is that crime exists in south africa.leaders won't bother doing anything as they spend their time exploiting people or sometimes they don't even have the power to send troops since these groups are really powerful.the only thing we can do to put an end is to protest massively.

Let's worry about and fix the crime in our country first before solving the world's problems.

Why would this be our problem in the U.S? Seems to be our country is trying to get rid of our own criminal in office and hey Africa is it's own country they should take care of their own and we will do the same.

who care's really? It isn't HIS JOB to worry about crime in Africa, is it?
Don't you think since African's don't pay US tax, that maybe our president should be worried about the people who do, and not them? huh?

BTW...This IS the US Yahoo Answer's......not AFRICAN
