Sorry for the poor quality but pick yourself up out of next week Danny Tickle, you've been munched (and it makes it better that its a Wigan player on the receiving against St. Helens)

Rugby is played close to the ground. American football players fly high and through the air to make tackles on 300 pound opponents hence the padding. Without it they would do great damage to their bodies.
However I still say Rugby. They play hard and tough, with continual play for 80 plus minutes, no changing offense and defense when the situation requires. The fitness required is very high and some of the forward are huge and strong and to take them on without padding, well yeah you have to be tough, mentally and physically. Try holding a pack in a scrum or ruck and see how tiring it is and how tough you have to stay.

Rugby no question!!! I'm a rugby man myself and im not bias but you cannot say that American footballers are tougher. Less padding more tackles and none of those stupid plays. Rugby just gets on with it! you still cant take away anything from the american footballers though they're still pretty strong!

Rugby players, yea. Same thing as an American football player only they do not wear all the protection. Which by the way, in my personal opinion, makes them tougher.

American football has 260 lb. guys who can move just as fast or faster than many of the 200 lb. rugby players. Yeah rugby players might be a little tougher. If nfl players didn't wear all that protection w/ their size and speed there would be many serious injuries. i've watched professional rugby matches and the speed of the game is very slow.

Rugby players. They both cause damage to the body, but rugby players don't even have padding. I don't know much about either sport, but I've watched both... and rugby makes me cringe sometimes, football is just the most boring sport on the planet... apart from maybe golf and baseball. Yeah, I have to definitely say rugby. I'm American.

Personally I think its rugby players...

Like you said they have scum hats (which is pretty much nothing) and gum shields...

Afootball players have full body protection, and is stopped pretty much constantly, there is no flow in the game. Once someone is knocked over, then the game pauses, unlike rugby (league), which doesn't stop until a foul.

That is easy. Rugby players hands down. Football players wear the most sophisticated pads and helmets. There are also all sorts of rules protecting players, ie no clipping, roughing QB. Rugby players dont wear much padding and they are much more accessible to injury.

Can't we just give both of them credit for being tough SOBs?

Rugby players don't wear pads, but they don't hit very hard.

American football players hit really hard, but they wear a lot of pads.

I'd say it all comes out even in the wash.

I'm American and you HAVE TO give it to rugby players. Broken bones on a regular basis and the saying shouldn't go "give blood play hockey" it should be "give blood play rugby".
