Why would they? What do they get out of it?
Any that gave out so-called "free domains" before not only puts extra ads on your site, but only "lease" it to you for free. They actually retain ownership of the domain name. Which basically means they can take it away from you at any time.
There ain't no free lunch. Get used to it!

Go to http://mail.aol.com
You can get email addresses with any available domain name for free. At a later time they are going to tie the domain names to their blogs.
You can get xxx@www.anyname.com or net. You can have multiple xxx's.

some give sub-domains for free, [see www.dyndns.org]
You are unlikely to find free domain names, but it can be pretty cheap. 123reg sells "co.uk"s for about £2
