My wife and I just had a consumer nightmare with this issue. First of all, avoid HP laptops; especially factory refurbished from the online HP outlet. The customer service is very polite but not very effective, actually it's quite frustrating after numerous calls. We dealt with them for 2 months and still we have not received a full refund and do not expect to get it back, even after 5 phone calls and several promises that they would make good on the 100% refund policy.

We ended up investigating the new line of Toshiba Satallite notebooks. Consumer Reports rated them near the top in warranty, customer service, and reliability. We ended up getting a new laptop at Sam's Club; a place we did not expect to purchase our next computer. Based on the research we did, we found the Toshiba to be the best value for the specs. The model we got was a P105 notebook and it came with 2048 MB of RAM (that's 2 GIG!!) most new notebooks only offer 1G (1024 MB), so the speed is way ahead of the competition. Also it offered 17" moniter, DVD-RW, Vista Home Premium (full version) and other amazing features. This has turned out to be the best laptop out there! We spent just about $1300 and for the specs as mentioned earlier, we will not need to upgrade any time soon. Check them out!
