I'm guessing it's for the same reason as it's amusing when someone stubs their toe. You know it hurts like anything, but perhaps laugh with relief that it's not you? I personally think it's hilarious when someone gets hit in the head with a ball. (don't know why, I just do...)

Laughter (and the things which inspire it) is a response to a situation that is different than what is expected.

In other words, assuming the person doesn't break anything or otherwise hurt themselves seriously, the sudden reversal of expectation creates such a shock that if we aren't saddened by the event, we must therefore be gladdened by it. The experience of pleasure, therefore, comes out as laughter, which can also quickly disappear if we learn the incident was more serious than we first realized.

Also, laughter is a social construct, so if we experience something that we have no 'background' in, we draw our understanding from others around us. If they are sad, we become sad because thats the experience we learn; if people laugh, we learn to laugh.

We laugh at something that is an aberration, something out of the ordinary. Seeing three grown men slap each other, poke each other in the eyes and act stupid is funny because it's very different than our expectations. The punch line of a joke is the twist in the expected result. So we laugh. Someone tripping is a totally unexpected event, so in triggers a laugh response until our better self can take over.

Unless it's in a movie and I'm supposed to laugh, I don't think it's funny at all. And I'm the one that at leasts asks if they need help and tries to assist one to get up.

I usually think everything is funny, but for some reason I don't laugh at that. I think it is rude and I am all about manners.
