I want to use a selection of electronic music tracks mixed in Ableton Live within a multimedia project for my final year university project. There is no commercial aspect to this at all and it will not be released publicly. How would I go about getting permission?

You'd generally wouldn't need permission insomuch as having always at the ready hard-copy evidence this film project is NOT produced/sold commercially and that disclaimers are presented prohibiting any copy for mass sale or distribution of this film product be made WITHOUT YOUR expressed written consent--which the answer is "Oh HELL NO!!"

That pretty much legally covers you. Feel free to use it.

Yes, you should be fine using the music w/o getting written permission from the artist(s).
If it were for a commercial release and there is money involved (royalties) then you would need permission from the artist, writer, and publisher.

I'm sure anyone would give you the OK if you did ask them, I just don't think you'd be doing anything illegal by NOT asking.

The rights you're talking about are called synchronization rights. Radio stations have blanket performance rights which means they can play anything on it's own but when you start synchronizing music with images, it's whole different ballgame! Those rights are guarded well and very expensive to obtain.

You're probably not going to have any problems since it will not be commercially released. Be careful about any public performance though.

Since it's for school, you don't need permission--just be sure to credit the performers according to whatever style guide your project is following.

As long as you credit the artist then it shouldn't be a problem. People do it all the time. What about at dances and stuff...... they use other peoples music.

It's not a problem as long as you appropiately quote them in some manner. I teach English and I teach my students to use quotes when refering to another person's work.
