I was in Porto in September for one day with my wife and two children. The Metro is awesome. It is clean and new and takes you anywhere you want to go. Vila Nova de Gaia is on the other side of the river. It was cleaner and there were fewer shifty characters. The Porto side near the river was dirty and smelly. We gave up eating icecream by the river because of the smell of garbage and urine. I also wouldn't recommend eating in the patio in front of Sandemans. The view is nice, though the food is horrible. The port was a highlight and the rest of the city was nice. The people outside of the river area were all excellent and helpful with information.

Luckily for you, when we travel we take notes and write travelogues for our non-commercial web site. Portugal is one of our favorites: http://www.thetravelzine.com

Have a great time!

It's too much for me to list here, but it's very helpful.
